If Leah Dennis found out I was here drinking late at night, that’d literally be a nightmare. Someone her age? She totally wouldn't be cool with it. Even if Xander and I were just friends, it still looked way too sketchy.
"What do I do now?" I was so panicked I almost dropped my glass and stared wide-eyed at Xander.
"Relax, it’s fine. She doesn’t live here. Probably just dropping off some food," he said calmly, then motioned toward the kitchen. "Quick, hide in there. I’ll deal with her, you come out once she leaves."
I didn’t think twice—immediately jumped up from the couch and ran into the kitchen.
"Your shoes!" Xander chased after me with them, stuffed them into my arms at the kitchen door, then slid it shut.
Through the glass door, I heard Xander open the front door and call out, "Mom."
In that second, I felt like I was caught in some sneaky affair—it was awkward and nerve-wracking.
