Chapter 365 Reluctance And Guilt

Had she not offered herself to him already? While they poked fun at each other, Jason pushed the door open, entering the room. “Boss, I received intel.” Hearing this, Mark turned around and adorned a solemn look on his face. “What’s the progress?” “Delilah was arrested in place of Caty Davis,” Jason replied. Mark frowned at the reply. Why was this woman so silly? Lyla furrowed her brows as well. “Is it worth her doing so?” Lingo jumped in. “To her, Caty may have resorted to extreme measures but it was done for Delilah’s sake. It’s unlikely that she had not noticed anything with Caty by her side for so many years. It’s not strange that Delilah did what she did.” What Lingo said made sense. “In that case, she’d be ruined forever,” Gretel remarked. Lingo turned to Gretel and added in a serious tone, “Everyone makes their own choices and considerations. She must have thought it through to do such a thing. Hence, she has to pay the price for her choices. You can also say that if Caty Davis really loves Delilah, she will not sit by and let Delilah be captured.” Though unable to fully understand Lingo’s words, Gretel nodded. Lyla watched the scene unfold, feeling gratified. Lingo may have a wild side at times, but she was reliable at handling tasks. Moreover, she had no qualms leaving Hansel and Gretel to Lingo, judging by her attitude toward them. With that in mind, she curled her lips. “Boss, do we need to do anything?” Jason inquired. “Help Delilah hire the best lawyer,” he answered. Jason nodded his head. “Got it.” He turned and left. Mark then turned to Lyla. “I owe her one.” Lyla reflected comprehension. “Delilah is a nice person. She’s only living a tiresome life because she carries everything on her shoulders. You should lend a helping hand be it sentiment or reason.” Lyla gave her two cents with a smile. Mark gazed at her with eyes that could melt hearts. Lingo let out a cough. “About that, I’m hungry. Come eat with me.” “Uh, get Hansel and Piers to go with you. I want to stay here with Mommy,” Gretel replied. Lingo rolled her eyes at her. “You hadn’t had much to eat the past few days. Don’t you want to go back in training?” Lingo asked. “Uh, yes I do.” “Follow me out to eat then,” Lingo retorted. Gretel, “...” She took a glance at Mark and Lyla before getting the hint, prompting her to leave the room with Lingo. “What’s wrong?” Hansel asked. “I have a sudden realization that I really have eyes at the back of my head,” Gretel said in the bid of self-ridicule. “With that IQ of yours, it’s hard to toughen you up.” Hansel, “...” Gretel, “...” The twins leaned against the door, trying to peek in. With that, Lingo carried them away. “Hey, what are you doing?” Hansel inquired. “Yes, Lingo. What are you up to?” “What bad habits are you kids picking up? What’s there to look at?” “I just want to take a look.” “Come eat with me.” “Are you really eating?” “What else if not that?” Hansel, “...” He was under the impression that it was an excuse. Who knew it was for real? ... In the ward. Mark and Lyla stared into each other’s eyes. Mark’s gaze was scorching. “Why-why are you looking at me like that for?” “Don’t you have anything to say to me?” Mark probed. “What-what’s... the matter?” Lyla retorted with a question, unable to grasp the meaning behind his words. Mark dangerously narrowed his eyes. “So you still don’t have any intention to tell me?” “Tell you what...?” Lyla asked. His hand inched toward Lyla’s belly for a rub. Although his eyes were scary, his hands were gentle. “What do you say? Don’t you owe me an explanation?” Lyla, “...” She had forgotten about it. Literally, she threw it to the back of her mind. “About that, I...” “What?” “It’s not that I’m hiding it from you. It just slipped my mind.” “Slipped your mind?” Mark raised his brows. “Are you sure?” “I really forgot about it.” “What about before?” Mark was not going to let her off easily. “Before was...” Lyla’s mind was spinning to come up with an excuse. “What? Haven’t you thought about a reason?” “It simply slipped my mind...” “Do you think that this reason is enough to convince me?” Mark stated. Lyla was intimidated by his presence. “No...” “Tell me the truth then.” "I only found out later but after that scandal of yours, as your wife, I can’t help but teach you a lesson even though I’m aware that it’s a fake. That’s why I didn’t let you know.” “This is the reason why you wanted to live in a different place and come up with excuses to stop me from touching you?” “Uh, that was also for the baby. You’d have guessed if you were smart enough.” Lyla grinned, hoping Mark would get over his anger just like that. “Are you faulting me for not being smart?” With lifted brows, Mark appeared infuriated. Lyla was quick to put her hands around his neck. “Alright, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have kept it from you. I’m the one to blame. Please don’t be angry, alright?” Mark, “...” One minute she held onto her views and the next, she admitted fault. Mark realized that he would resign to his fate when he looked into her eyes. He could be ruthless to anyone but Lyla. “Did you know that when I found out that you were pregnant, I thought that you would leave with him again...” Mark said. Lyla was taken aback by his words. It never occurred to her that she would leave Mark this misconception. Lyla could see the seriousness in his eyes. “Mark, I’m sorry. That’s never my intention. I didn’t think I’d give you such an impression.” Lyla solemnly told Mark. She understood the feeling. When a person loved someone dearly, there was a sense of fear of losing them. Lyla was no stranger to this feeling. She could immediately relate to it the moment Mark brought the matter up. Mark kept his eyes on her without a word. “Mark...” Letting out a smile, Mark held her hand. “But I quickly pushed away this feeling because I know that you won’t leave me. The Lyla I know is not that kind of person.” Hearing this, Lyla chuckled. “You’re right. It was through great hardships that I returned to your side. I won’t ever leave you easily.” Mark reached out to pull her tightly into his arms. Again, he was filled with the emotions of recovering what was lost. Mark had no clue how long more he could live this life but he hoped that it would not happen again. “Lyla, promise me that you’d tell me everything no matter what happens in the future,” he uttered. Lyla bobbed her head. “Yes, I promise you.” Embracing her, Mark let out a heavy sigh of relief. Lyla nestled against his arms and let out a cheerful grin. It did not take long before her tummy rumbled. She was helpless about the situation. “Mark, I’m hungry... No, your son is hungry.” Mark resignedly smiled. “Didn't you have a lot?” “I was eating before, now it’s your child who wants to eat.” “Fine, fine, fine. I will take care of it whether it’s for you or him. Let me get someone to fetch some takeout.” Lyla nodded in smiles. It was great to live her life with him like this. ... Over on the other side. With the matter with Lyla resolved, Mark went to visit Delilah. She was detained. Mark looked at her with a frown. “Why are you refusing help from the lawyers?” Delilah appeared paler. “There’s no need for that.” “You have nothing to do with this. Why are you doing this?” Mark asked in confusion. Hearing this, Delilah lifted her gaze. “Mark Pattinson, you made an effort for your loved one, why can’t others do the same? “You’d do anything for Lyla. Must I send the person who is good to me here?” Delilah retorted with a question. Her voice deepened. “I can’t do it. “Even if she’s an atrocious bad person, she did it for my sake. I can’t send the person, who is nice for a change, to prison.” Mark’s eyes darkened. “You’re not helping her. You’re putting her in a worse situation.” “That’s what you think.” Staring at her, Mark had a sudden revelation that the person before him was not the Delilah he knew. Perhaps, he underestimated her. Mark studied her face as he inched closer. “You’re just running away.” Caught off guard or perhaps having been seen through, Delilah averted her gaze. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” “You know well what I’m talking about.” Mark was firm. Delilah pursed her lips, refusing to speak. Mark pulled himself together. “Delilah, listen to me. Accept the help from the lawyer and you’ll be fine.” “There’s no need to try and make up for your guilt.” While he was still talking, Delilah stood up and made her way inside. However, she stopped after taking a few steps. Without turning back, she seemed to be deep in thought. Mark narrowed his eyes and fixated on her figure. “Mark Pattinson, what if my death is the cost of having Lyla back. Would you make me take the risk?” She asked. Furrowing his brows, Mark gazed at her back. He pursed his lips and held his tongue. Delilah suddenly scoffed. She had already known what the answer was, yet she had to ask such a stupid question. She turned back to take a glance at Mark. Laughing to herself, Delilah walked in without another word. Only she knew of the despair in her eyes. Mark sat there, not in a hurry to leave. Instead, he reflected on the question she asked. He believed that although that was in his mind, he would not go through with it. Mark was clear that Lyla would never agree to it if saving her was at the cost of Delilah’s life. There was no relationship between her and Delilah, only feelings of reluctance and guilt. These feelings of disinclination and guilt were a millstone around his neck...
