It sounded like clarification, yet it carried a faint edge, as if warning Louisa not to read too much into it.
Joe had been hot-headed. Yves seemed no better—quick-tongued, suspicious by nature, and far too eager to speak. It made Louisa wonder whether Charles' real shortcoming was the people around him.
She didn't bother explaining herself again. Instead, she met Charles' gaze directly and said, "Mr. Charles, if you wish to compensate me, perhaps there's another way."
