Jaron was practically bursting with curiosity. "What else have you got? Show us already!"
Thalia froze. Since when did they have a second gift?
She tugged lightly on Tyren's sleeve and whispered, "Improvising now? A little heads-up would've been nice."
"They love your work," he said. "Paint another one right here, win them over, and we might seal the deal tonight."
It had been ages since he had seen her paint. Suddenly, he felt curious—he wondered how much her skills had improved over the years.
Their quiet exchange, whispering to each other, didn't escape the Backshaw family's notice. To them, it looked like a couple flirting.
Lucinda, thoroughly amused, turned to Geoffrey and said playfully, "If the second gift is even better, I'll let you have the chess set."
Geoffrey huffed. "It's my birthday. All the gifts are mine."
"Come on, Dad, I'm your daughter. Cut me some slack." She looped her arm through his, grinning.
