Giselle said, "Marina, my feet hurt. I'll head upstairs to rest."
Marina hummed in assent, then said gently, "Okay, get some rest. If they still hurt tomorrow, you should see a doctor."
Giselle nodded and left. Now, Chantelle and Marina were the only ones remaining in the living room.
With a smile, Marina said, "Giselle and Gavin grew up together, and that makes them childhood sweethearts.
"When they were little, Gavin treated Giselle like his own sister—closer than some of his cousins. He always refused to hang out with other children, but he'd take Giselle out to play."
Chantelle pursed her lips as Marina continued, "Back then, Gavin used to stay over at the Whitmans. Sometimes, Giselle and a few others would stay over at our house too.
"Back then, among the nine families in Greenville Heights, our families had the closest relationship. When they were little, the elders even arranged a betrothal between the children."
