Chapter 457 Their Children
Nell caressed her belly, thinking that it would not be long before she gave birth to a baby as cute as Lizzy. The corners of her lips tugged into a sweet smile with that thought.
“Lizzy, did Great Nana tell you that you’re going to have a little brother or sister soon?”
Lizzy was more than excited to hear this topic being brought up.
“I know! Great Nana told me that mommy and daddy went away this time to pick up a little brother or sister for me. When you come back, I’ll have a real brother or sister!”
Her curiosity grew as she spoke.
“Mommy, where do you pick my brother or sister? Can you choose whoever you like?”
Nell was rendered speechless by her questions, and she had no idea how to answer her.
She did not hold back the smile on her face as she mumbled, “Lizzy, this isn’t something we can control. It’s all up to god, and it doesn’t really matter who your little brother or sister is going to be. You’re going to love them very much, right?”
“Of course!”
Lizzy was trying to look like she was all grown up. “I’m a big sister now. I’ll have to take care of them from now on. They’ll have to listen to me, and I’ll bring them out to play and buy them lots and lots of food.”
Nell listened to the kid’s naive and adorable ramblings and felt her heart melting.
Grandma Leith appeared in the video call right then.
“Lizzy, it’s late. Let mommy get her rest, and we’ll talk next time, okay?”
Lizzy did not want to end the call, but she knew that Nell needed her rest, so she nodded.
“Okay.”
The girl turned back to face Nell and waved at the camera.
“Mommy, I’m going to sleep now. You should rest too.”
Nell pursed her lips. “Okay, good night.”
Lizzy puckered her lips and planted a kiss on the camera before hanging up the call.
Nancy appeared from behind Nell after the call ended.
She handed Nell a glass of milk and grinned. “A video call with Miss Lizzy? I bet she misses you.”
Nell chuckled. The truth was that she knew better than anyone else how much Lizzy missed her. It was just that Lizzy had Great Nana by her side taking care of her, but she had to take care of the matters at hand on her own. No one could help her.
Nancy’s eyes roamed around the room as if she was wondering about something.
“Nelly, do you ever feel like Miss Lizzy looks kind of like you?”
Nell was taken aback by her words. “Nancy, when did you learn to sweet talk me?”
Nancy shook her head innocently.
“Nelly, I’m not sweet-talking you. I’m being serious. I didn’t see it when Miss Lizzy was a baby, but as she grew older and as her features grew more and more prominent, I can see that you two look somewhat alike.”
Nell chuckled.
“If she resembles anyone it’ll be her father. I’m her mother, but we’re not related biologically. How can we look the same?”
Nancy parted her lips as if to say something, but Nell cut her off.
“Where’s Gideon? Where did he go?”
“Oh, sir went out with Matthew just now. He said he had something to do.”
Nell furrowed her eyebrows.
“He was out the whole day today. Why is he going out again at night? I know the doctor said he can walk now, but his wounds haven’t healed completely yet. His body is still weak, and it’s so cold outside. What if his wounds deteriorate?”
Nancy did not say a word. Nell knew she was not to blame. She stood up with knotted eyebrows and walked to the window, waiting for Gideon.
Gideon returned half an hour later.
It was already November, and Country F was located in the far north. Lin City was having a chilly November.
She could see a black car stopping right in front of the building from afar.
Gideon was wearing a black coat as he got out of the car with Matthew following close by, and they both entered the building through the gates.
Nell released the breath she did not know she was holding and returned to the room.
Gideon and Matthew were inside the house in no time.
Nell could feel the waft of chilly air the two men brought in with them.
She prompted Nancy to get their coats from them and asked, “Where have you been? It’s cold outside tonight.”
Gideon looked into her eyes for a moment. He was in no hurry to explain himself, so he let Nancy and Matthew rest and waited until it was only the two of them left in the room. “I ordered someone to look into the woman we met today.”
Nell froze. Gideon met her gaze and smiled warmly. He led her to the sofa, and they sat down next to each other.
“Weren’t you thinking about her the entire day? I thought it’s better to look into it and give yourself some peace of mind rather than to let the problem eat at your heart.”
The heater was running in the room, but Gideon’s hand in hers was somehow cold to the touch. Out of nowhere, Nell felt her nose twitch.
She sniffed a little to cover it up and did her best to suppress her emotions.
“What did you find?”
“There’s indeed a group of people after her, but they aren’t people from the Violette Clan. We’re still not clear on who they are, but we have a feeling that they have something to do with your friend Old K’s death.”
Nell did not expect to be surprised this way.
She did not know what that meant, but a feeling of unrest and insecurity washed over her.
Gideon sneezed right then.
Nell’s eyelid twitched as she patted Gideon’s back. Then, she got up and poured him a cup of hot water.
“What happened to you? Are you feeling sick?”
Gideon shook his head.
“I’m fine. The wind was a little strong tonight. Might have gotten a cold from being outside too long.”
He took a few sips of water as he spoke.
Nell thought that he looked paler than he was this afternoon, so she reached a hand out and touched his forehead.
It was fortunate that Nell thought to check. If she had not done that, she would not know that Gideon was running a fever, and his forehead was burning.
Nell’s expression changed.
“Why didn’t you tell me you have a fever? I’m calling the doctor right now,” she said in a hurry.
Before she could move, though, the man grasped her wrist and held her in place. With a slight pull, she tumbled into his arms.
Nell grew anxious.
“Gideon Leith, stop joking around. You’re still hurt, and now you have a fever. Do you have a death wish?”
A small smile appeared on Gideon’s face.
With his arms still around her, he moved her to sit on his leg. He lowered his head a little to close the distance between them and laid his heated palm on her stomach.
“There’s no hurry. The doctor is available at any time of the day. Let me check up on our kid.”
Right after he spoke, he bent over and put his ear against her stomach.
Nell was dumbfounded by his actions, but she did not think it would be wise for her to push him away like this. The only thing she could do was to support his head with her hand.
Gideon listened for a few seconds. He frowned when he could not hear anything.
“Why isn’t our baby moving?”
Nell could not resist rolling her eyes at his question.
“Do you think the baby can move right after it’s conceived? It’s been two months. It doesn’t even have a heart yet. You’ll have to wait at least 5 to 6 months for any movements.”
