Chapter 463 Too Late for Regrets
“It’s already quite late, we should make a move.”
At that point, Gale also stood up and offered. “Since you’re all here today, why not stay for dinner?”
Nell coldly rejected the offer. “It’s fine, we still have some things to do.”
Then, she walked off first.
Her attitude revealed her blatant dislike toward him, causing Gale to rub his nose, feeling a little awkward.
Gideon glanced over at him without saying anything. They had known each other long enough to be able to communicate with each other just by exchanging looks.
Gale chuckled. “I’ll have to ask for your help with this issue. Nelly might distrust me, but she should listen to your words.”
Gideon sighed. “I’ll try my best but I’ll always respect her opinion. Whichever choice she makes in the end, I will not stop her.”
His reply was no different than a polite refusal of Gale’s request.
Gale could do nothing about it, so he merely nodded. “Alright, I understand.”
With that, the group left the Tiger’s Den.
Taking a look at the time, Liam said, “It’s already quite late and you guys won’t have anything to do when you get back anyway. Why don’t you guys come take a break at my place and have some dinner?”
Just as Nell wanted to nod, her phone suddenly rang.
As she looked at her phone, she frowned before accepting the call.
It was a call from Joseph Garrett. He asked in an urgent tone, “Nelly, are you still in Country F?”
Nell nodded as she asked, “Uncle, what’s wrong?”
Joseph urged. “Your grandfather is in critical condition, if possible, please get a flight back tonight. You should at least send him off one last time.”
Nell trembled. She did not want to believe what she had heard.
She just stood there as her mind went blank. In that instance, all her senses had been completely drowned out for a moment.
After a long period of silence, she barely managed to force out her own voice.
“H-how… He was still doing fine when I called him just a few days ago…”
Through the phone, she could tell that Joseph was also feeling down.
“These sorts of things can change over just a few days… Your grandfather’s body was already at its limit even a few months ago. He had tried his best to barely hold on for the past few months but it seems like it’s the end of the road. The only thing he wants right now is to see your face. I really hope that you can come back. I hope you can at least grant him his last wish.”
Nell fell silent as her grip on her phone became tighter.
After another long pause, she replied with a soft voice, “Alright, I understand. I’ll make the arrangements immediately.”
After she hung up, she glanced over at Gideon, all teary-eyed. Her voice had almost completely disappeared, leaving her with faint sobbing sounds.
“Gideon, Uncle said… Grandfather… He’s at his limits…”
In reality, when she was speaking on the phone, Gideon could already hear Joseph’s words through the phone.
His heart sank as he looked at the time on his wristwatch. Then, he turned around to take a look at Liam.
“Liam, we need to get back tonight. I don’t think we can make it in time if we get a plane ticket. Can I trouble you to make some arrangements for us?”
Liam knew the severity of the current situation. He merely nodded and said, “Okay. I still have a private aircraft at my place at the moment, I’ll head back immediately to have them make the preparations. They should be ready to go by evening.”
Nell and Gideon nodded in gratitude before rushing back to the hospital to gather their belongings.
For the rest of the afternoon, Nell’s mind was an absolute mess. If it was not for Nancy’s help, she probably would not have been able to even pack her belongings on her own.
Sometimes, things like this were just human nature. When they still had something, they would not realize just how precious that something might be. Only when they were about to lose it, would they remember… That they still had a lot of things to say… That they still had a lot of things they had not done… Only when they remembered all that, did they realize that it was too late for regrets because they had already lost their time and opportunity.
Gideon, seeing her completely out of it, comforted her. “Don’t overthink it, it’s a part of the circle of life. Moreover, your second uncle said your grandfather was in critical condition, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s on his deathbed. Maybe once we get back, your grandfather might be able to stabilize his condition once more.”
Nell meekly nodded. Although she knew that Gideon was only comforting her, the words did help her a little bit.
In actuality, she knew full well that death was a part of life that was not humanly preventable. She also knew that, based on Joseph Garrett’s personality, he would not have such a frantic tone, going so far as to ask her to head back immediately to send her grandfather off, if the situation was not dire enough.
However, humans, even in the most dire of situations, would still desperately grab on to that last string of hope.
Even if it was just a one in a billionth chance, they would still choose to believe in it, hoping that this miracle would occur. Maybe he would just suddenly get better?
Only by grabbing onto this slither of hope can she persevere on.
They quickly finished packing their stuff. However, right as they were about to head off only did Nell remember that Gideon still had a wound on his body.
She hurriedly asked, “Is it really okay for you to board a plane with your wound?”
Gideon just shook his head. “I’m fine, I’ve already re-bandaged it earlier. The flight will only take a few hours. When we get home, I can get another doctor to take a look at it.”
Hearing that, although still worried, Nell knew that there was no other choice.
If she headed back, there was no way Gideon would not follow along. Hence, she meekly nodded back at him.
Soon, Liam called them to tell them that he had made preparations on his side. Hence, the group immediately made their way to the airport.
With Old Master Garrett in critical condition, not only were Gideon and Nell heading back but when the Griffin family heard about it, they also sent Liam along to accompany the two.
After all, the two clans were quite close. If the old man passed away this time, with Liam Jackman over there, he could at least serve as a representation from the Griffin family to mourn the passing of Old Master Garrett.
The flight would take off at 7:00 pm, which meant that they would arrive at their destination at 3:00 am.
When Joseph Garrett heard about their plans, he sent people over to the airport to wait for them. Hence, as soon they arrived at the airport, the Garretts were already there to greet them.
They got in a car and headed directly to the hospital.
At the hospital, Old Master Garrett was already on his deathbed.
Everyone in the Garrett family was just waiting at the hospital, fearing that if the Old Master passed away, they were not by his side.
Even Jim Garrett, who had been exiled overseas, had been called back.
After all, he was still Old Man Garrett’s son. At this moment, nothing else mattered.
Furthermore, Jim Garrett had already been stripped of all his power. Except for those small overseas branches that he managed, he had lost everything. There was no way he had any ability to do anything reckless anymore.
When Nell and the rest arrived at the hospital, Joseph Garrett had just received the notification of their arrival and walked out.
Seeing their presence, his eyes glimmered.
“Nelly, Gideon, you guys are back.”
