Chapter 467 Turn The Tables

She let out a sweet and magnanimous smile and said, “I visited the old madam yesterday and heard that my sister-in-law is pregnant so I came by. Huh? Where’s Sister-in-law?” Gideon’s eyes softened at the mention of Nell. He softly replied, “She’s upstairs. She’ll be down later.” “Oh, can I go up to look for her then?” Gideon’s gaze paused on her pretty and innocent face. In the end, he refused. “There’s no need for that. She doesn’t like outsiders going up there.” The room fell silent at these words. Outsiders... This word locked her outside the door, leaving the scene rather awkward. Yet, he seemed to be ignorant of that fact. The smile on Helen’s face froze and it took a while before she could realign her emotions. “Okay, I’ll wait for her here.” Without answering, Gideon turned to instruct the maids to prepare lunch. He then left Helen to help herself before taking off himself. About ten minutes later, Nell came down the stairs after a change of wardrobe. “Sister-in-law,” Helen got up from the sofa and greeted her with a smile. To be honest, Nell was not at all close with this distant cousin. However, she was a guest after all. Nell returned a nod and smile. “I’m sorry to keep you waiting.” “No, I should’ve let you know beforehand. Sister-in-law, I hope I didn’t intrude.” Nell shook her head. “No. I’m happy to have you here.” With a straight face, she turned to enquire Gideon’s whereabouts from Aunt Joyce and was taken aback when she found out that he went to the gym room in the villa. Nevertheless, she quickly came to grips with the situation. He could not possibly be working out due to his injury so it was probably because he did not want to attend to this cousin and the gym was his excuse to get away. Hence, Nell did not comment further. She ordered the maids to prepare extra servings for lunch. Helen wanted to help out but Nell was not going to have it. Although they were not close, Helen was still a guest. How could Nell possibly have a guest working in the kitchen? To her surprise, Helen answered with a smile, “Sister-in-law, you don’t have to be polite with me. I major in nursing at school and am quite an expert in nutrition for pregnant women. Although the villa has maids, why don’t you try out my cooking? It can be considered an approval of my academic achievement if you think it’s great.” Nell would seem overly-courteous and distant if she were to refuse at this point. She nodded and grinned. “Don’t work yourself too hard. You came a long way only to have you prepare a meal. If words were to get out, Grandma would say that I bullied you.” Helen let out a smile. Her pretty face painted an embarrassed blush. “No, the old madam informed me to keep an eye on your meals when I came over. It’s my major after all.” After a pause, she added. “Of course, the maids you hire aren’t that bad, but they’re outsiders at the end of the day. The food you take is vital during this period and it’s better if you have your people watching over.” Nell moved her line of vision and threw her a glance. Helen was still grinning ever so sweetly while Aunt Joyce at the side turned glum. All the maids in the villa, from the lobby to the kitchen, were under Aunt Joyce’s jurisdiction. The maids’ ability and character, even the maternity matron on standby were handpicked by her. There was no issue with them. Helen’s statement, directly and indirectly, pointed out the unreliability of the people in the villa. Yet, here she was, helping them to scout a mole out of kindness. Nell darted an abstruse look at Aunt Joyce. Still, she said nothing and instead, grinned. “Sorry to trouble you then.” “You’re welcome, Sister-in-law.” Helen was led to the kitchen while Nell remained there with downcast eyes for a moment before returning to the bedroom. She picked up her phone and gave Old Madam Quinton a call. “Grandma, what are you doing?” “I’m watching a cartoon with Lizzy. What’s up?” “Nothing, I just called to ask.” “Oh, right. Is Helen at your place today?” Nell curled her lips and answered naturally, “Oh, yes.” “That girl found out you’re pregnant and insisted on going over to visit so I told her the address. I hope she wasn’t a bother?” “No, I’m happy she could come.” “Great. I know you like it quiet but she’s not a tactless person. I told her to make haste back to school after a quick visit so as not to trouble you for long.” Nell’s eyes dimmed. She then smiled upon recalling Helen’s words. “It’s no trouble but I may have imposed on her.” “What’s wrong?” “Nothing. I guess she’s worried about the people here and has gone to the kitchen to make me a meal. I’m sorry to inconvenience her.” There was silence at the other end of the line. The old lady’s awkward voice came moments later. “This girl... And I just praised her sense of propriety! She might be too enthusiastic. Nelly, don’t take it to heart. Tell her not to come the next time if you really don’t like it.” “No, my heart is filled with warmth by her enthusiasm.” “Great then.” Nell exchanged a few words with the old madam before hanging up. After putting away her phone, she let out a smile worth pondering. “Aunt Joyce.” Aunt Joyce, who was waiting by the door, came in swiftly. “Young Missus.” “Send a few capable people to the kitchen to help Miss Wilburn. She’s a guest after all, we can’t have her burdened.” “Yes.” Nell no longer appeared downstairs after making the order. Now that she was carrying a child, she became easily drained. Hence, she went to the study to pick up a book before lying on a chair to leaf through. All the way to the afternoon. Gauging on the time, Nell put down the book and went to the dining hall downstairs. As Gideon had not returned during this time, she sat alone in the hall. The maids had already spread out the cutleries. It was not long before Helen, along with the other maids, served the prepared dishes. With Nell already sitting there, Helen made haste to place the dishes on the table. She grinned. “Sister-in-law, I’m sorry I’m not nimble with my hands. Please forgive me if there’s anything that isn’t to your taste.” She spoke as though she was the host of the place while Nell was the guest. Nell was usually more accommodating toward women. Helen might be a little thick in the head when it came to manners but she did no wrong. Despite being covered in sweat from the hard work, Helen still coated her words with sweet talk. Feeling for her, Nell replied, “I’m really sorry to trouble you. What’s this talk about forgiveness? Take a break and leave the rest to the maids.” All smiles, Hellen shook her head. “No need for that. I’ve also made soup and it’ll be ready soon. Sister-in-law, do wait a little longer.” With that, she plunged headfirst into the kitchen.
