CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY EIGHT – VINDICATION
On the day of the pivotal proceedings, Kayla was ushered into the courthouse feeling a potent cocktail of emotions - terror, hope, weariness, residual grief over her mother's condition. She stole a glance at Lance sitting stoically in the gallery, and he gave her the faintest of nods imbued with steadfast support.
The proceedings opened with Kayla's public defender, the rumpled Ian Rossen, squaring his narrow shoulders as he approached the bench.
"Your honors, I stand before you today to illuminate a catastrophic miscarriage of justice perpetrated against my client, Ms. Kayla Danvers," he began in a surprisingly assured tone.
"New evidence has come to light that fundamentally exonerates Ms. Danvers of any culpability in the crimes of fraud and identity theft of which she was wrongfully convicted."
Rossen turned to face the visibly skeptical judge and jurists, his chin lifted with what could have been misinterpreted as defiance.
