"I can't tell you how good it feels to hold you again," he murmured into her hair. "Like I can finally breathe after being trapped underwater."
Kayla clung to him tightly, soaking in his familiar warmth and scent. "I'm so sorry I ever left. I honestly thought I was doing the right thing, but I've never felt more lost or alone than these last few days without you."
Lance drew back, cupping her face in his calloused palms as he studied her with naked adoration. "Well, you'll never have to feel that way again. We're in this together from now on – my mother's tantrums be damned."
His decisive words bolstered Kayla's resolve, but she couldn't resist a pang of trepidation. "You know she's not going to give up so easily, right? We're probably in for the fight of our lives against her vindictiveness."
A steely glint entered Lance's eyes, though his expression remained tender. "Then we'll face it head-on, side-by-side. I won't let her manipulations torment you any longer."
