The wound on his arm still faintly throbbed, but the pain was nothing compared to the turmoil in his chest.

"Gabe, you're back." Vivian stood there holding an elegant insulated container. "I heard from Aunt Marlene that you got hurt. I was worried, so I made some soup for you."
But Gabriel didn't slow his steps. In fact, he didn't even spare Vivian a glance. His mind was consumed by thoughts of Emily who had disappeared without a trace. Vivian's presence was nothing but air to him.
He brushed past her and simply said, "Take it away."
Vivian's smile froze. She watched Gabriel's cold, distant back and tightened her grip on the thermal container until her knuckles turned pale.
She couldn't accept it.
