Sarah stiffened at the older woman’s words. She kept her shiver at bay and offered Vera a polite smile. “I have a friend picking me up, Mrs. Stone,” she said in a low voice.
In the dead of the night, the light nervous shake of her voice was deafening.
Vera smirked and looked at her watch with purpose. “It’s really late and you must have left the house in anger. It’s not good for a scorned young girl to be wandering the streets at night. More so when you don’t know when you will be picked up.”
Vera’s insinuation was: ‘I know you fought with William Colton because of me and my daughter. That is why I called him out. I knew you were in there. But now, you should get into the car with me. If I feel kind, I will drop you home.’
Sarah blinked slowly and wondered how she should respond. Finally, she held up her phone and waved it. “My friend is five minutes away.” She didn’t want to say much else.
