Katelyn’s POV
I was packing up my things in the newsroom when my phone vibrated with a new message. I expected another work text, but instead, it was from Lucas.
He didn’t usually contact me at this time, so I stopped and read his message right away. The words were short and a little strange: “Can you check on Dad? He’s not answering my calls.”
I stared at the words, feeling uneasy. Ethan wasn’t the type to ignore Lucas. Even during his busiest days, he would send at least a quick “I’m fine.”
My heart skipped. I texted back, I’ll go check now, grabbed my purse, and hurried out of the building without saying goodbye to anyone.
The drive to Ethan’s was quiet. My mind kept replaying every conversation I’d had with him over the past few days. He’d seemed tired, but not sick.
Had he caught something again? Had something happened at work? By the time I pulled up to his house, worry was twisting my stomach into knots.
