Steam rose from the bodies where they lay scattered at the tree line and in the square, the last remnants of heat leeching into the cold earth. The air reeked of iron and torn flesh.
I stood alone now, in the center of it all, my breath ragged, bare skin streaked with red that wasn’t all marked ones.
Zane was still pacing inside me, restless. One got away.
“I know.” My voice came out rough, scraped raw by the shift. “Ronan’s on him.”
He’ll catch him, Zane said, a low growl curling under his words. He’d better.
The cold creeped over me slowly. My body trembled as the adrenaline drained away, every cut and bruise making itself known now that there was nothing left to kill.
I dragged a hand through my hair, slick with melted snow and blood, and looked toward the rest of the village.
