Judy woke up from a heaving feeling in her chest like she was drowning. The moment she opened her eyes she tried hard to take a deep breath. She opened her mouth but realized she could not speak. She had an oxygen mask over her face, connected to a ventilator. The woman next to her yelped in a piercing voice. She could not hear what the woman said. Her ears were buzzing. Then, suddenly, there was a crowd around her bed. Her vision was rather hazy. "Kris!" "Mommy!" "Judy!" Judy had a good look at the people around her. The first person she saw was a sobbing Natalie. Natalie's eyes were so puffed up that Judy could barely recognize her. "You're up! You're up!" Avery hugged Claire. "Judy is up!" Claire was crying too. She kept wiping her tears. "Thank god." "Kris, do you know how long you've been asleep? You frightened us!" Natalie held her hand so hard that it hurt Judy. Judy furrowed her brows. She wanted to say something, but the ventilator was stopping her from speaking.
