When I reached the hospital, the emergency room lights were still on. The attending physician walked out, exhausted.
“Ms. Scott, your grandmother’s condition is critical. The cancer has spread to her lungs; the targeted drugs are working less and less...”
“Is there another way?” I clutched his white coat, my knuckles white. “I’ll pay whatever it costs. Just save her!”
“We’ve contacted specialists in North City. They recommend trying CAR-T therapy, but it’s expensive—only a thirty percent success rate...”

My vision blurred.
I’d seen the cost of CAR-T therapy online. It was a number I couldn’t even scrape together the change for.
