The Hale family arrived wearing grim expressions, ready to take Nicole away. But the moment they came face-to-face with Hendrix, their attitude shifted to one of flattery. "Mr. Ferguson, now that Nicole is mentally impaired and paralyzed, she won't be able to trouble you again," said her father, Vernon Hale. "Rest assured, we won't go easy on her. She'll be punished accordingly. We're begging you. Please have mercy on our family." Hendrix remained silent. Without warning, Vernon slapped Nicole hard across the face. Her cheek swelled, tears streaming from her vacant eyes. The brutality of it stood in stark contrast to the father who once showered her with affection. In truth, his love had always come with conditions. Now that she had nothing left to offer, it was merciful enough that he hadn't cast her aside completely. Hendrix frowned and looked away, his face devoid of emotion. "Whatever happens to her is none of my concern. I've settled my score. Just keep her out of my sight."
