When the lawyer placed the final agreement down in front of me, he smiled faintly. "Ms. Lowe, it's all settled."
The school-district apartment under Stanley's name.
The car he cherished more than anything.
And the last bit of money left in his company's accounts.
Every single item now clearly bore my name.
That clause in the prenup—if the husband cheated, he would walk away with nothing—proved devastatingly effective.
"How did he take it?" I asked.
The lawyer adjusted his glasses. "Mr. Sinclair was very emotional and insisted everything was earned through his own hard work. I reminded him that the apartment's down payment, the car, and most of the mortgage payments all traced back to your father's account. After that, he fell silent."
As he was speaking, my phone rang. It was Stanley. I put it on speaker.
His voice was hoarse. "Sylvia, you took the apartment and the car… Can you at least leave me some money? I can't even afford rent right now…"
