Wendy's hand paused slightly before she looked up. "How could that be? Don't listen to those rumors. We have a child together. You think we'd divorce that easily?"
She smiled as she spoke, which helped ease Robert's mind a little.
"That's good to hear," he said with a hearty laugh. "Every couple argues now and then—it's part of being married. But I know you two are good kids, and you don't give me reason to worry.
"Still, if James ever gives you a hard time, you come straight to me. If you don't feel comfortable saying it yourself, I'll say it for you—and I'll make sure he hears it loud and clear."
Wendy sliced up the fruit and stuck a toothpick into each piece.
"Okay. I won't keep anything from you, Grandpa."
She felt guilty saying it and didn't dare meet Robert's eyes.
Though the smell of disinfectant lingered in the room, the afternoon was quiet and peaceful.
Since Robert wasn't feeling tired, they made light conversation, chatting here and there.
