George's face twisted with frustration.
He was just about to blow up at Evelyn's words, but then Amelia's warning popped into his head—don't push too hard with Evelyn right now. She still had the old man backing her.
George drew a deep breath, chest rising and falling heavily. "Evelyn, I know I haven't done enough for you before," he said, voice a little softer. "That was my fault. I promise, I'll make it right."
Evelyn folded her arms, face blank as she watched George put on his little act. Her eyes mocked him wordlessly.
She scanned his awkward expression, her gaze dropping, tone unreadable.
After a long pause, Evelyn looked back up, eyes sharp and icy. "I didn't need your care before, don't need it now, and I sure as hell won't need it in the future."
