“Hannah is allergic to what?” I asked again, my voice sharper this time.
Aiden subconsciously pouted. “It’s… peanuts. Hannah told me before that she and her mom are both allergic to peanuts.”
I clenched my jaw, a wave of thoughts rushing through me. I suddenly thought of Hannah, how I felt this inexplicable connection with her. How I was more concerned for her, more protective, than I had ever been with other patients.
“Uncle… You look scary. What happened to you?” Aiden asked, his voice full of concern.
I turned to him, my expression hard. “Eat here and wait for me. I’m going somewhere. Don’t run around, you understand?”
“Okay, Uncle. Don’t worry. As long as I have food, I won’t run around,” Aiden said, trying to lighten the mood.
I smiled faintly, messing his hair, then left the café.
