Chapter 527

Evelyn had always believed that the son she had painstakingly raised would undoubtedly be on her side, especially when it came to Nadine. After all, he used to despise her. She thought a few carefully chosen words from her would be enough to make Brad give Nadine the cold shoulder. Little did she know that Nadine had clouded Brad's judgment so thoroughly that he couldn't tell right from wrong anymore. He wouldn't even listen to his own mother. He was even willing to say things that would damage their relationship forever. At this point, Evelyn had no choice but to face the reality that Brad had been completely bewitched by Nadine, and nothing she said would ever reach him. Since he was no longer thinking straight, Evelyn decided to confront him with hard facts and reason. After all, Sean's parentage still remained an unsolved mystery to this day. Back when Nadine first married into the Hamilton family, Evelyn was convinced that the child was the product of an affair. She thought that if she could track down the man Nadine had an affair with and get him to admit to it, she could kick Nadine out of their family for good. But after a year of investigation, she couldn't find even a single trace of Nadine's lover. Since there was no sign of Nadine's supposed lover and Adam and Daniel both told her to drop the matter—going so far as to officially add Sean to the Hamilton family's registry—Evelyn had no choice but to let it go, no matter how reluctant she was. All she could do was turn all her hatred toward Nadine. A pregnant woman had brazenly married into the Hamilton family and became someone even Adam treated with respect overnight. Meanwhile, Evelyn, the rightful lady of the house, hadn't received a single word of recognition from Adam since Nadine joined the family. Even her husband, whom she depended on, had started taking Nadine's side on everything. How could Evelyn not resent her? Evelyn's deep-seated hatred for Nadine wasn't born overnight—it was the result of years of resentment piling up. Now, even her son was blatantly taking Nadine's side. How could she possibly swallow this bitter pill? "Brad, I've already done a paternity test on that child—he's not yours. The two of you don't share a single drop of blood. Nadine's been playing you for a fool, yet you still want to stand by her?" At this point, this was the only weapon left in Evelyn's arsenal. There was nothing else she could leverage. Yet, it was also her trump card. Once the truth about Sean's parentage came to light, there was no way Brad would continue to protect Nadine. Evelyn felt as though she had the ace up her sleeve as she looked at Brad expectantly. The crystal chandelier shone down on Brad's face. It made his pale face glow, almost as if it was covered in a layer of frost. He gave Evelyn a derisive look and sneered, "So what? Nadine made it clear that the child wasn't mine when she married me. "She never lied to me, and she's been raising Sean on her own. If anything, I'm the one who hasn't stepped up as a father, so who am I to criticize her?" Nadine had indeed been clear from day one. She said she'd raise the child on her own, and that the child had nothing to do with him. All she wanted was for him to register Sean under his family name, nothing more. Even though he might have held the title of Sean's father, he hadn't truly done anything for him. For his own mother to use this against him now was completely out of line. "You've gone too far, Mom! Let me make one thing clear. It doesn't matter if Sean is my blood or not—Nadine is my woman! Even if the child isn't mine, as long as she's my wife, it's my duty to treat her well and protect her!" His voice wasn't loud, but it was filled with determination. Evelyn had never seen him act like this. Brad had never been this forceful, even when it came to Jean. Her son's assertiveness left her speechless. After standing in place for a while, she realized there was no point in staying any longer. Clutching her chest, she stumbled away.
