Emiliano's POV
With my secret pressing down on me like a heavy stone, I sat on the edge of my bed. The tips of my fingers were numb, and my hands shook in my lap. I kept looking at the floor as if it would suddenly open up and engulf me. Suddenly, I felt as though the walls surrounding me were tightening because they knew I was going to split the family.
Except for the ticking of the ancient clock on the wall, the room was quiet. Make a tick. Talk. Tick, tick, tick. I wished I had more time to find a better way, but every second eroded my courage. I was aware that everything would change drastically after I told the truth.
"Dinner is ready, Emiliano!" The sweet, familiar sound of my mother's voice drifted up from downstairs.
I winced. I had always found solace in that voice strong when I was afraid, soft when I was ill. Now, I was determined to shatter her heart.
