Chapter 906
The elders all turned their attention to Moses, who was overwhelmed by the sorrow of losing his daughter.
He was in no mood to bicker with them. In fact, he was currently stuck between avenging his daughter and prioritizing his family's interests. He couldn't decide.
Without a word, he headed toward Sage Chamber and sighed. "This was a place of wisdom, but today, it feels like a den of conspirators."
"Moses, I don't like what you just said. What do you mean by saying this is a den of conspirators? It sounds like we're doing something bad," Owen retorted, visibly displeased.
Moses turned to him and questioned, "Haven't you done anything wrong?"
A surge of diffidence coursed through Owen. The other three elders also glanced at him in silence.
Thanks to their longevity and expertise in medicine, they weren't easily fooled. If the Sykes family was indeed creating venom puppets, they would be complicit in the matter as well. But for the sake of power, the five families had also done their fair share of unethical deeds over the years.
As they feared the punishment the young lord would bestow upon them, eliminating him was their priority now.
So, even though everyone was aware of the situation, none of them brought up the Sykes family's involvement in producing poison. They avoided the topic altogether.
Their family members who had gone to Cobra Island were either dismissed or hidden away upon their return to Summerland as no one wanted to disrupt the unity among the families.
Revisiting past grievances could wait. Now, the elders chose to abandon their sense of justice and the ancient medical creed to preserve their families' wealth and status.
As the one with the most prominent status and the eldest among the five elders, Bernard began, "Moses, for the sake of our friendship, can we put your daughter's matter aside first and discuss it later?
"What we're talking about now involves the thousand-year legacy of our families. At your age, you should be able to understand your priorities."
"Exactly. Bernard's right," Owen concurred with a chuckle. "I lost my sister and grandson too. Do you think I'm unaffected at all?"
The Sykes family suffered the most casualties this time, yet he remained unbothered. Having plenty of descendants he barely knew meant that losing a few wasn't a big deal to him.
Moses was seething with anger, but he couldn't vent. He hadn't made up his mind to turn against the four families and lacked the courage to confront them at all once.
The young lord had yet to make a public appearance, so no one knew his capabilities. But if it could be confirmed that he was strong enough to counter the five families, perhaps Moses would sever ties with the other families.
When they arrived at the coffee room on the second floor, Owen dismissed a few of his relatives who were practicing alchemy and brewed coffee for the other elders.
"I believe you all know why I invited you here today."
All of them fell silent. The competition between their families was always fierce, so the trust they had for each other was lacking.
After all, the Hippocrates Sect was the pillar of Summerland's medical community. One wrong move could spell disaster for their families.
Popping a peanut into his mouth, Eldric dusted his hands and finally began after a long pause, "Do you think we should consult the Lord of Summerland about this matter?"
"Absolutely not. What if the lord disagrees? We'd be doomed by then."
"Exactly. It's better to be discreet about this."
Recalling how Cyrus singled him out during the live broadcast while he taught Seraphine a lesson, Bernard felt somewhat uneasy and said, "Cyrus seems quite formidable. If the young lord is even more powerful, do you think we truly stand a chance?"
His question left the room once again in silence.
Owen quickly reassured, "Bernard, no one in Summerland's medical community can stop us once we join forces. If the young lord had truly entered the Miracle Healer Realm, he would've dealt with our family a long time ago. Why would he still be hiding?"
"That's right. He's been lurking in the shadows ever since the Hippocrates Sect has fallen. I bet he isn't as strong as we imagined."
Feeling anxious, Bernard stood up and stroked his long beard, seemingly deep in contemplation.
He suddenly had an idea.
