Chapter 5
David was sleeping right beside me, and here I was, doing this with another man.
Thinking of my role as a wife and a mother, a wave of sharp unease and guilt crashed over me. I reached out and grabbed the man's wrist.
He looked at me, surprised.
"What's wrong?"
I opened my mouth, but no words came. My heart felt like it had been tossed onto a hot skillet, searing and twisting with every second.
Before I could speak, he sheepishly withdrew his hand and understood what I meant. Pressing his lips together in a thin, regretful line, he offered me a forced smile.
"It's okay," he said softly. "I get it. I understand."
"After all, you're married, and you even have a kid…"
His voice trailed off, growing quieter, less certain. It almost sounded like he was talking to himself.
I just nodded. Sitting up, I pressed a hand to my chest and watched him wipe his hands and walk away. The knot of anxiety in my throat finally loosened, settling back down into my gut.
