Chapter 6
I left Ethan with my in-laws and gave them some instructions. Then, I packed my bag and climbed onto my uncle, Tom White's tractor, waiting at the village entrance for the trip into the city.
The tractor rumbled and roared, giving me a headache, but inside, I felt warm. As sunlight bathed my shoulders, I settled back against the soft pile of straw, content.
Uncle Tom glanced at me in his rearview mirror and couldn't resist teasing. "You two lovebirds are still so close. Makes a person envious."
He then sighed. "Unlike my daughter, who scrimped and saved at home, waiting for her husband to make money in the city. And what does he do? Makes his pile and ends up in another woman's bed."
His words hit me like a splash of cold water.
I pressed my lips together, a knot of worry tightening in my chest. What if David made money in the city and decided he didn't want Ethan and me anymore?
