Chapter 7
Outside, the rain was coming down in sheets. I hadn't brought an umbrella, and now I was stuck under the eaves, unsure what to do.
Rain hammered the flooded ground, steaming as it fell. I had no idea how long the downpour would last.
But David… What if he was caught out in it and stranded somewhere halfway? That wouldn't be safe at all. I couldn't just stand here, so I decided to find him.
My hand tightened around the note in my pocket. Without another thought, I ducked through the rain to the security guard's window, knocked, and asked for directions to the address. The old man gave me a pitying look, but I was already turning away, plunging back into the storm.
Within minutes, I was soaked. Rain streaked my face, blurring my vision. I wiped my eyes with a wet sleeve and called out to David in the darkness.
Sparse streetlights cast a sickly glow, stretching the reflections in the puddles into long, distorted shadows. A flash of lightning split the sky, followed by a crack of thun
