Chapter 37 Ghosts of the Past.
Life had begun to return to its usual rhythm. Dad’s health was improving, and the scare of his heart attack had brought our family even closer. Kai and I were more united than ever, and Lily’s laughter once again filled our home with joy. In the midst of this relative calm, I decided to catch up with my step sister Charlotte, who had recently been on the hunt for a new job.
Charlotte and I arranged to meet at our favorite café, a cozy little place that served the best pastries in town. As I arrived, I saw her sitting by the window, looking out at the bustling street. Her usually vibrant demeanor seemed subdued, her shoulders slightly hunched as if carrying an unseen weight.
“Charlotte!” I called out, waving as I made my way to her. She turned, and a small smile graced her lips.
“Vanessa, it’s so good to see you,” she said, standing up to embrace me.
