Isabella’s POV
He didn’t comfort her.
He didn’t touch her.
He didn’t console her.
But his silence was so cold. And it suffocated me.
The drive home was painfully and heavily quiet. The scene earlier played in my head in loop.
I kept my eyes outside the window, trying so hard to divert my attention, but I failed.
I looked at Matteo. He wasn’t saying anything. He was just driving, eyes fixed on the road, jaws clenched, straight face. I didn’t see anger. I didn’t see regrets, or anything. Not even sadness of his dying ex-wife.
“Are you okay?” I asked, unable to hold it in any longer. The longer the silence, the longer my heart suffers in pain. I couldn’t stand his silence. I couldn’t stand the coldness.
He didn’t look at me, not even a single glance. “I’m fine.”
Liar. I could feel the heaviness behind those words. Like it wasn’t meant for me, but for him. To remind him that he should be fine.
