Chapter 179
After calming down Caleb and Annie, Leroy took Zoe to the patient's room.
"Leroy, I heard from the nurses that Yvonne got into the accident right at the entrance of the hospital. That's probably why everyone's paying so much attention," Zoe said in a low voice.
Leroy lowered his gaze and paused at Yvonne. Yvonne's eyelids fluttered slightly. Leroy stepped forward and entered the room.
"How are you feeling?" Zoe asked gently, while Leroy observed quietly from the side.
Yvonne, who just woke up, was still in a daze. But the moment she saw Leroy, her spirits lifted.
"Leroy, I'm so glad to see you. Where have you been these past few days?" Her eyes reddened as she spoke, and Zoe, feeling a bit awkward, let out a soft cough.
Only then did Yvonne notice Zoe standing nearby, and her face flushed. "Oh, Zoe, you're here too. I'm fine now," Yvonne replied softly.
She then turned her gaze back to Leroy. "Leroy, is it true that you've moved into the villa?"
Yvonne had heard about it and had come to the hospital to confirm the news, only to have an accident at the entrance.
Leroy nodded slightly, and a trace of disappointment crossed Yvonne's face. However, she quickly regained her composure.
"Leroy, is it because of Ms. Payne?" She looked worried. She was afraid of hearing the truth.
Zoe noticed Yvonne's unease and interjected, saying, "It's because of Old Mrs. Payne. Leroy has been taking care of her. Ever since he left the Payne family, no one else has cared for her."
"Leroy only moved back to take care of her," Zoe explained.
Upon hearing this, Yvonne's expression softened a little.
Leroy checked her wound. He gave Zoe some assurance after confirming that everything was fine.
"Get some rest. We'll be right outside," he said with a faint smile.
Yvonne nodded slightly.
Out in the hallway, Zoe couldn't help but comment, "Leroy, you're really cold-hearted. Aren't you even going to talk to Yvonne properly?"
She recalled what Leroy had mentioned about dating before. Judging by their interaction, she thought Leroy might have been making things up.
"She needs to rest right now." Leroy looked for an excuse. It was then that he remembered Scarlett had called multiple times.
When he called her back, Scarlett's cold voice came through. "Leroy, so you finally remembered us? When are you coming back?"
Scarlett sounded demanding, as if she was giving order.
"There's something important at the hospital tonight. I need to stay."
For the first time ever, Leroy seriously considered the idea of distancing himself. Heidi's health had improved, perhaps it was time for him to have his personal space.
On the other end of the call, Scarlett was momentarily stunned. Clearly, she hadn't expected Leroy to choose to stay at the hospital. She was annoyed and hung up right away.
Leroy was confused. He stared at the phone and felt helpless. What did Scarlett mean by hanging up like that?
At night, Leroy sat quietly by the hospital corridor. Several nurses came by to ask him to rest, but he politely declined each time.
To outsiders, it appeared as if Leroy was protecting Yvonne affectionately. But in reality, Leroy was watching surveillance footage before his shift ended.
He had specifically requested for the footage. The footage only captured the moment of the incident. It showed Yvonne being struck by a car that had suddenly sped out of nowhere.
The Middleton family had already made a report of the accident.
It was obvious that the driver had deliberately targeted Yvonne, or else the timing seemed too coincidental to be believable. But Yvonne didn't seem to have any known enemies.
