Callie quickly put the documents away, then walked toward the door. “Come in.”
Standing under the hallway light, Regan held a bowl of soup with a bright smile.
“The autumn air is dry, so the kitchen prepared pear soup with snow swallow to nourish the lungs. I brought you a bowl as a late-night snack,” she said.
Callie’s gaze fell on the bowl as she accepted it. “You really didn’t have to trouble yourself. I feel bad about this.”
Leaning slightly against the doorframe, Regan spoke in a low voice, “I owe you an apology. Those people who showed up that day were all under my command. Anyone would’ve been suspicious. So, Ahmad punished me. I don’t hold any grudges. But I didn’t expect you to speak up for me. That made me feel even more guilty.”
Callie paused slightly as she stirred the spoon in the bowl, surprised that Regan had brought this up herself.
“So that’s how it is. Well, I suppose it was indeed suspicious,” Callie said with an open expression.
