She walked in to see Milton Carter and Oliver chatting away. She almost walked over to join them, but Mrs. Thompson had just turned to Marcus Sinclair with a smile: “Sir, you’re back too.” Elaine froze. Marcus’s warning from earlier still lingered in her mind. The second she heard Mrs. Thompson’s greeting, she spun around and hurried upstairs. “Ma’am?” Mrs. Thompson called out, slightly puzzled. But Elaine acted like she didn’t hear and made a beeline to the study, slamming the door shut behind her.
