Chapter 687
"So, Clara's using my office now, is that right?" Maeve asked.
"Yes..."
Zayla couldn't bring herself to meet Maeve's eyes. She knew Maeve had intended to give the Brooks Group a break, but with Sergio's betrayal, everything had taken a devastating turn for her.
"Where is she?"
"She's upstairs. The staff here… they're all about kissing up to whoever's in power.
"Please don't get upset, Ms. Scott. The most important thing right now is figuring out how to kick the Brooks family out, and then there's Bryce..."
"I'll deal with Bryce's issues. I won't let anything happen to him."
Maeve looked up at Zayla. "What's the status with the Jefferson family?"
"Conner still thinks he can push Mason out of power. He's been pouring money into it since this morning.
"But don't worry, our PR team hasn't let up. We saw this coming, so the negative press on Mason is being kept to a minimum."
"Good."
Maeve nodded. "I'll leave this to you for now. I'm still officially resigned, so make sure nothing slips."
"Understood, Ms. Scott."
Maeve nodded again and was about to leave when she opened the door and came face to face with Clara.
Clara looked different—gone was the innocent, girl-next-door vibe. She wore a chic white dress and three-inch heels.
Her face had slimmed down, but her whole presence had shifted. She looked every bit the high-society heiress.
With a smile, Clara said, "They told me Ms. Scott was in Zayla's office. I thought they were joking, but here you are."
Maeve raised an eyebrow and smiled back. Her tone was deliberately playful. "Ms. Stewart?"
Clara's smile faltered, but only for a moment. "Stewart feels like a lifetime ago. If you hadn't mentioned it, I might've forgotten.
"But since this is Mirage Group, Ms. Scott, it's probably best if you call me Ms. Ramoz from now on since I'm the general manager."
Clara's sharpness caught Maeve off guard.
Maeve's smile didn't waver. "How long you'll be in this position... well, that's yet to be seen."
"How long I stay isn't really your concern, Ms. Scott."
With that, Clara pulled a document from her bag. "I'm here because of this."
Maeve frowned slightly as she looked at the document in Clara's hand.
Clara continued, "I heard you came today, so I made sure to bring this for you. I figured you'd find it useful."
Maeve took the document and opened it. The first words she saw were "Divorce Agreement".
The document had already been signed, and a divorce decree lay right in front of her. This was something Maeve had longed for, but now all she felt was betrayal and deceit.
Sergio wanted both the divorce and the benefits.
"Thanks, I actually needed this." Maeve said nothing more and brushed past Clara as she left.
With a triumphant smile, Clara raised an eyebrow and glanced at Zayla. She deliberately raised her voice. "Zayla, I know you're Mr. Davenport's secretary and have been assigned to assist Ms. Scott.
"But don't forget who's sitting in the general manager's chair now—and who's signing your paycheck."
Maeve knew Clara had said that on purpose, as she was fully aware that Maeve was still within earshot. The thought made Maeve smile.
She had expected Clara to be more formidable by now, but it seemed she hadn't changed all that much after all.
The higher they climbed, the harder they fell. The more they flaunted their position, thinking they had made it to the top, the more brutal the fall when it came.
Zion had just stepped out of his car in the parking garage and popped a lollipop into his mouth when someone covered his eyes from behind.
Zion chuckled, "Quit messing around."
