Chapter 688
"How did you know it was me?" Maeve suddenly jumped in front of Zion.
Without missing a beat, Zion caught her hand and said, "Even with my eyes closed, I'd know it was you."
"I've heard Mr. Spencer never lets anyone get behind him."
"That's true."
"Well, I've got some bad news for you." Maeve told Zion everything that Zayla had just shared with her without leaving out a single detail.
Seeing the deep frown on Zion's face, Maeve reached out to smooth the lines on his brow. "What's wrong? I'm the one who should be upset, but you're the one frowning."
Zion's voice dropped to a low murmur. "This is on me. I really thought Zayla and Bryce could handle it."
"What's done is done," Maeve said, linking her arm with his. "Now all we can do is try to fix it. Besides, this is my problem, not yours."
"Did Clara give you a hard time?"
"Not really. You know me—I'm not the type to lose a verbal battle."
"Apparently, my name doesn't carry enough weight if people still think they can mess with my woman."
Sensing the tension in Zion's voice, Maeve grew wary. "What are you planning to do?"
"Naturally, I'm going to make them regret crossing my wife."
"Didn't you always say you don't argue with women?"
Zion's voice softened and had a hint of affection in it. "When it comes to my wife, I make exceptions."
Maeve brightened. "Alright, since you're being so sweet, I've got something to show you." She pulled out the divorce agreement and placed it in front of Zion.
The signatures and the bold words "Divorce Decree" immediately caught Zion's eye, and he stared at them, frozen.
"What's wrong? Aren't you happy?"
Zion smiled. "It's not that."
"Then why did you freeze up?"
"I was just wondering if the city hall is open on weekends."
"What?"
Before Maeve could process what he meant, Zion had already pulled her into the car.
"Zion! Stop joking!"
"I'm not." Zion's tone was serious. His expression was equally determined—like he wished he could drag the city hall to his doorstep just to get this done.
Zion floored the gas pedal, and they were at the city hall in what felt like seconds.
As Maeve looked up at the sign, she suddenly asked, "Zion, have you thought this through?"
"I've thought of everything, Mavy. All I want is for you to marry me."
"No... that's not what I meant."
Seeing her hesitation, Zion's eyes darkened. After a moment's pause, he finally asked, "You... don't want to?"
"It's not that. It's just... I didn't bring my passport."
