Chapter 689

Neither Maeve nor Zion remembered bringing their passports, and Zion hadn't even grabbed his ID. On the drive back, Zion's frustration was evident in his darkened expression. Maeve couldn't help but sneak a few glances at him before finally asking, "You... didn't know you needed your ID to get married?" "I... don't have much experience with this," he muttered, clearly regretting his oversight. If Zion had known they needed those documents, he would have kept them on him at all times. Maeve stifled a laugh at seeing him so flustered, but her amusement seemed to trigger something in Zion. Without warning, he spun the car around. Maeve was caught off guard and asked, "Zion! What are you doing?" "Going home." By "home", Zion meant the Spencer Estate. When they finally walked into Spencer Estate, they found Kurt in the middle of watering his plants. He froze. "Getting married? Now?" Kurt looked genuinely puzzled—a rare expression for him—as he stared at Zion. After a moment, Kurt set down the watering can and strode up to Zion to smack him. But, given the height difference, he only managed to land a hit on Zion's shoulder. Kurt dropped his cane heavily and glared at them. "You young people don't take marriage seriously enough!" Seeing Kurt upset, Maeve quickly tried to smooth things over. "Mr. Spencer Senior, Zion was just talking out loud. I didn't—" "Quiet!" Kurt cut her off. He pointed at Zion and said, "Marriage is a big deal! Did you even propose properly? Did Maeve even agree to marry you? "Have you prepared the engagement ring? Arranged the engagement banquet? Set the wedding date? You haven't done a damn thing—so why should she marry you?" Maeve stood there, stunned. She had assumed Kurt was against their marriage, but it turned out he was just mad about the lack of preparation. "I hate to say it, but your father was way better at wooing a woman than you are!" Zion considered for a moment before he said, "All my personal assets have already been transferred to Maeve, and I've proposed. She accepted." As he spoke, Zion lifted Maeve's hand to show the ring on her finger. Kurt barely glanced at it before grumbling, "That's just your personal stuff! Does that include the Spencer family's assets? Did you inform your elders? "No? Then get out of here and don't even think about getting that marriage license until I've organized the engagement banquet!" After delivering his rant, Kurt leaned close to Maeve and whispered, "There's a whole legal angle to this. "If you have the wedding before the marriage license, all the gifts and money will be yours, and Zion won't see a penny. You might even get a nice little windfall out of this!" Maeve forced a laugh and glanced over at Zion. He calmly added, "He's right. With the Spencer family engaged to the Scott family, all my money is already in Maeve's hands. "As for the engagement banquet and the wedding, I'll leave those arrangements to you, Grandpa." "What's there to worry about? Do you think I'd be stingy when it comes to spending on my granddaughter-in-law? We'll make it a grand affair—a huge celebration!" Kurt agreed without hesitation. As Maeve and Zion left Spencer Estate, Maeve couldn't shake a feeling of unease. "Zion, do you really think your grandfather... knows what he's doing?" "Honestly, I'm not sure. But he's been itching to plan an engagement banquet ever since my dad strongly refused to let him do theirs. Now that he finally has the chance with his grandson, let him have it." "Alright then. Let's just hope it's not too over the top."
