The river stretched out before them, marking the border. On the other side was Aurelia.
This place had always been dodgy. The river itself wasn’t much better—murky, littered with garbage. Even fish hardly showed up here. And the stories weren’t exactly comforting; the locals around here claimed that every once in a while, bodies would float by in the water. No surprise there. Most of them were dumped from Aurelia, carried downstream to this side of the border.
"Gunshot wounds," Clara Bennett muttered, crouching by the riverbank. "Looks like there was a shooting here a couple of days ago."
"Boss, I got us a boat. We can cross right now," Aaron Hill said, walking up with a small, shabby-looking vessel.
"Good. Let’s go," Clara nodded.
They climbed onto the boat. The river wasn’t wide—just a little over ten meters. Crossing it didn’t take long.
When they reached the other side, what greeted them wasn’t any better. Clusters of compounds stretched out across the land.
