"Huh?"
Evan froze for a second, not sure how to respond.
I mean, what was he supposed to say? That Mrs. Cooper looked genuinely happy? It's a divorce for crying out loud, not some wedding celebration. But saying she was heartbroken would've been flat-out lying.
Evan hesitated, then said, "She, uh… didn't seem to react much. Just said, 'See you at four.'"
A scoff came through the speaker on the other end. "Didn't react? She's probably grinning like she won the lottery."
There was definite gritted-teeth energy in that tone.
Evan paused a beat before replying seriously, "I don't think it's quite that bad."
If he remembered right, Claire just had a faint smile—looked a bit pleased, yeah, but not laughing-out-loud level happy.
Silence.
And then, click. Call ended.
Evan: "…"
Hospital.
Nelson was standing by the window, face dark as a storm. He stared down at his phone as the screen dimmed, his grip so tight it looked like he might crush it.
