The morning light filtered through the glass windows of my office, casting soft shadows across the sleek wooden desk where my laptop sat open, displaying the intricate blueprints I had been working on for the past two hours.
Despite the progress I was making on Mr. Laquan’s project, a small part of my mind still lingered on my last conversation with Nicholas.
I hated the idea that my success on this project might not be entirely mine.
That the only reason I got the deal was because of him.
I had worked too damn hard to have anyone—even Nicholas Andrieux—pull strings for me.
I shook my head, pushing away the thought. No. Mr. Laquan wouldn’t have chosen me unless he truly believed in my work. Right?
As if on cue, the sharp ringing of my office phone broke through my thoughts. I exhaled, reaching for the receiver.
“Yes?”
“Alicia,” my secretary’s voice came through, calm and professional as ever. “Mr. Laquan is here to see you.”
My grip on the receiver tightened
