Chapter 53 Closing In

LUCIEN I sensed footsteps even before they drew nearer. Clenching my fists, I used one arm to draw Kara closer to me, placing a protective arm around her. My second hand gripped the gun tighter. If I had to use it, I wouldn't hesitate, not for one second. My eyes darted back to Mira sitting there, scared in the cell. Vaguely, I calculated how long it would take for me to break her out of there. The guards by the side were still sleeping, but I had no doubt that they could wake up at any moment, especially when someone tried to pry the keys out of their hand. "Fuck." A curse died on my lips. The sound of footsteps drew even nearer. I had to make a decision, and maybe one that wouldn't screw us up. "What are we going to do?" Kara whispered. All her bravado from previously was gone, and leaving the scared little woman that learned how to rely on me in a way. It brought a faint smile on my face. "Don't worry," I whispered, still holding her close. "I'll get you out of here no matter what.
