Chapter 42
The rain came down in sheets as Camila gripped the steering wheel, her hands shaking uncontrollably.
Tears blurred her vision, and more than once she nearly crashed, but none of that mattered-she floored the gas pedal, desperate to reach the scene.
Her heart was pounding, tangled up with panic and dread, so heavy it physically hurt. Headlights from passing cars briefly lit up her pale face, and in those fleeting seconds, she looked like someone who'd already lost everything.
She prayed it was just a sick joke, but the call had come from 911-emergency services. That wasn't something easily faked.
Camila didn't even dare to ask the one question screaming inside her head: were her parents still alive?
Her fingers trembled harder by the second.
Tears fell silently, tracking down her colorless cheeks. The pain was so sharp, so deep, she couldn't even sob anymore.
