Chapter 4
The day I went to reissue the adoption papers, I detoured past Grandma's old house.
The wooden door bore a faded sign: ‘Bless This Home’. The apple tree outside the wall was taller now, pink petals littering the dusty stone steps.
I pushed the door; the lock was rusted shut. Peering through the crack, Grandma's jasmine vines had overgrown the fence like an impenetrable wall.
"Miss, who are you looking for?" Mrs. Lee from next door emerged, carrying groceries. She studied me, then gasped. "You're... Jane?"
I nodded, my throat tight.
"Oh, such a shame." Mrs. Lee took my hand, leading me towards her house. "After your grandma passed, no one lived there. That boy Alan comes every year to clean. Said he'd renovate it soon..."
My heart skipped a beat.
"He always spends a long time in your room," Mrs. Lee poured me a cup of hot coffee. "The sketch pad you left on the desk the year you ran away... he keeps it on the very top shelf of the bookcase. Won't let anyone touch it."
