ALPHA KONAN'S POV  Sleep was far from me. Madeline betrayed me. I muttered continuously, unconsciously, like a mantra. I buried myself in work. It seemed like the only way I could silence my thoughts.  The morning was here. It arrived too soon. It brought the inevitable departure of Alpha Novare and his people. I had to see them off because it was only customary that I did so. Yet, the only person I wanted to see wasn't in sight.  Then, she appeared from the other end of the mansion. My eyes were fixed on her as she made her way to join Alpha Novare and the others. Her eyes were on everything except me. She clearly and deliberately avoided my gaze.  Alpha Novare noticed, and the smug bastard that he was, leaned closer and whispered to me.  "Tone your stare down a little Konan. You could burn her with those laser eyes of yours."  I scoffed.  He grinned and added. "Your whore will be back like she never left. Chill out Konan.
