Chapter 3

Since Andrew had dropped me off not far away from the Bergman residence, I planned to walk there. This was the first time he kicked me out of a car in five years. However, I quickly came to a stop when I remembered I was pregnant. I couldn't take the risk of miscarriage. Instead, I called Richard and Jennifer, offering a sleek excuse on Andrew's behalf. I told them he left urgently for work matters and that I was stuck here because I couldn't get a cab. But I couldn't fool Andrew's parents, who knew their son the best. In ten minutes, they had picked me up and driven me back to their place, where the family physician confirmed that I was pregnant. Smiling earnestly, they said to me, "You're finally pregnant after five years! Jo, you know what Andrew's like. Please don't take him too seriously. "When you give birth, his attention will return to the baby." I knew Andrew would never change his ways, and I didn't care, but I agreed with them anyway. Richard and Jennifer were gentle with me and attentive. They made me stay at the Bergman residence. Not only that, they arranged for a nutritionist to plan my diet and the best nanny to look after my daily needs. On the other end, Andrew had to deal with Millie, who was upset about my pregnancy and made a scene for quite a while. He would not have entertained the complaints of his past lovers, but for Millie, he willingly put aside his work and brought her on a trip abroad to pacify her. In the photos that an investigator sent to me, I saw them enjoying their time on islands, even dancing and kissing on a speedboat. At one point, Millie's parents reached out to Andrew. He paid them to stay away from Millie, just like a lead of romance novels—a knight in shining armor who protected his woman from his parents and lived happily ever after. Alas, life was not a fairytale. Andrew could never pay off Millie's family of leeches. I was occupied during this time, too. While taking care of Andrew's issues, I worked hard in my job at Bergman Group, my ambition clear for everyone to see. I even paid for the paparazzi photos of Andrew with my own money and hid them away. Meanwhile, my in-laws, who monitored me in secret, thought I cheated on Andrew because of my weird behavior. When they found out I paid for the paparazzi photos, they warmed up to me. "You've been cleaning up Andrew's mess over these years. Sorry for the trouble." I smiled at Jennifer. "Jennifer, that's my duty as his wife." She patted the couch, signaling to me to sit next to her. Holding my hands, she said, "Don't fret about Andrew. We'll take care of his problems. Stop going to work for now and focus on your pregnancy. The most important thing is to give birth to a healthy child." Leaving Bergman Group meant losing my access to internal information. Why would I do that? Pursing my lips, I argued, "Jennifer, I know my limits. I will not sacrifice my health. Look, I love working. If I don't work, I will ruminate." Glancing at me, she quietly transferred a large sum of money to my bank account. In fact, my in-laws had always been generous to me, often sending me huge amounts of money that I had no use for. So, I saved them up. Jennifer had never transferred this much money in one sitting to me, though. It seemed like my gamble had paid off. Smiling, I thanked her for the love. After Jennifer left, I stared at the sum she transferred to me. Without hesitation, I donated it all to charity. Placing a hand on my flat belly, I thought, "I didn't do all of that just for her money. My goal is to own the Bergman Group." To me, power was the best gift.
