Chapter 658
Liam watched Maeve's feigned anger quietly, taking his time before responding, "Given the meager salary Mirage Group pays you, it wouldn't even cover a day's expenses for an heiress like you. I did you a favor by resigning on your behalf. You should be grateful."
He paused, then added, "Besides, you seemed rather pleased just now."
Maeve was indeed pleased.
Liam had unwittingly delivered her resignation letter on a silver platter. With Zayla's expertise, it wouldn't take long to trace it back to him.
With her testimony and Zayla's evidence, they could easily accuse Liam of unlawful imprisonment.
Maeve had initially thought Liam was a tough character, but aside from disregarding the law, he seemed to be ignorant of it.
She couldn't help but smile to herself. It seemed getting close to Liam might be easier than she'd thought. Perhaps she could even uncover valuable information about Seathburn City, including the truth behind the car accident that killed her and Zion's parents.
After they got out of the car, Bailey escorted Maeve and Liam to a luxurious hotel.
Before leaving, Bailey took another glance at Maeve. Only after confirming that both Liam and Maeve had returned to their rooms did he instruct the bodyguards, "Keep a close watch. Don't let anyone leave."
"Yes, Mr. Malcolm!"
Bailey then made his way to the hotel lobby and dialed Conner's number.
At that moment, Conner was still in Seathburn City, celebrating a successful alliance against Mirage Group with various merchants. Seeing Bailey's call, he stepped out into the corridor to take it.
"Liam has arrived?"
"Yes, Mr. Jefferson. And Ms. Scott is with him," replied Bailey.
"Oh?" A flicker of doubt crossed Conner's eyes.
The news of Maeve's disappearance had been all over the internet for days. After her clarification post, there had been no further updates. "Why, then, was she suddenly with Liam?" he wondered.
"This is good news. Keep a close eye on them and find a way to make sure Liam and Maeve stay in Yewridge," Conner instructed.
Bailey explained, "But Mr. Larson is scheduled to leave tomorrow—"
"Get the airline to spread false information. Keep them for a few more days."
Conner chuckled coldly, "Mirage Group and that bastard Mason are about to fall. With Maeve in Liam's hands, Zion and Sergio will be too distracted to focus on anything else.
"I want Maeve to see firsthand what happens to those who oppose me."
"Yes, Mr. Jefferson." Bailey quickly ended the call and obtained the contacts of Zion and Sergio, leaking the news that Maeve was in Yewridge to them.
With them leaving Seathburn City, the city would be solely under Conner's control.
…
The next morning, while Maeve was having breakfast in the hotel lobby, Bailey approached and said, "Mr. Larson, Ms. Scott, today's flight has been canceled due to mechanical issues.
Mr. Jefferson extends his apologies for the inconvenience and invites you both to stay in Yewridge for a couple more days. We'll arrange a private jet to take you to Laventon soon."
Maeve immediately saw through Bailey's lie. While spreading jam on her toast, she remarked, "Was the flight really canceled due to mechanical issues, or is it because Conner doesn't want me to leave?"
Bailey smiled and replied, "Ms. Scott, you must be kidding. Why would Mr. Jefferson want to keep you here?"
Maeve let out a dismissive scoff. She knew exactly what Conner was up to.
He thought that keeping her here would lure Zion and Sergio to Yewridge, allowing him to stir up trouble in Seathburn City. Little did he know, he had already walked into her trap.
Maeve casually asked, "By the way, Mr. Malcolm, I remember you were always by Mr. Jefferson's side. Why did he send you back alone this time?"
Her question was calculated, catching Bailey off guard. His momentary look of panic was brief before he quickly composed himself.
"Mr. Larson is an important partner to our group, so Mr. Jefferson sent me back to assist him," he explained.
"Is that so? Mr. Larson must command quite a bit of respect then," Maeve remarked.
