Carlos’s pov
I barely noticed the rough grain pressing into my skin as I sank further into the worn leather chair. The rage in my eyes caused the room's shadows to squirm like snakes. It felt like the walls of this safe haven were closing in on me, getting smaller and more confining. Hours of hushed threats and plans whirled in the dark had left the air stale and heavy with tension. But I would rather not shatter. I didn't want to break right now. The foundation I had built was collapsing.
With my jaw hurting from clenching my teeth, I thought, "They're all snakes." Snakes are slithering behind handshakes and smiles. Faces I once trusted are like knives poised to stab me in the back.
