Mae’s POV I’ve just tucked Ruby into bed when there’s a barely audible knock on my front door. It’s late – too late for a package delivery or a salesperson. I dial Henry’s number. “Mae?” he answers on the first ring. “I’m sure everything’s fine,” I tell him as I descend the stairs, keeping my voice low to avoid waking up Ruby, “but someone just knocked on my door. After the day we had, after everything we found out with Aaron, I’m just feeling a little on edge and was hoping to keep you on the phone while I answer the door if you don’t mind.” “Of course, yeah. It’s pretty late for a house call.” I thank him as I pull back the curtain next to the front door. I haven’t yet turned off the porch light, and it clearly illuminates my visitor. Without saying anything yet to Henry, I unlock and open the front door, beckoning in Aaron. “It’s okay, Henry,” I say in front of my ex-husband so he knows who I’m on the phone with, “it’s just Aaron.” I close and re-lock the front door
