Katelyn’s POV
The morning at the TV station began as if nothing had changed. I walked in with my bag over my shoulder, ready to face the day, though the weight in my chest had not lifted since the argument with Ethan.
Jamie, my assistant, met me at the door of my office. Her face was brighter than usual, her steps quick. She carried a small stack of folders but stopped to greet me with a grin.
“Congratulations,” she said.
I blinked. “On what?”
“On staying,” she said. “Everyone thought you were going to resign after what happened, but Leo said you’ll keep your position. You must feel relieved.”
I forced a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “Relieved,” I echoed.
Jamie placed the folders on my desk and left, humming under her breath. Her reaction was what most people would expect, but I felt no relief.
The word stayed flat in my mouth. I sat in my chair and stared at the wall. If my staying was meant to feel like victory, why did it feel hollow instead?
