The days following Kai’s hospitalization were a haze of worry, fear, and relentless questioning. Every time I tried to make sense of what had happened, I felt like I was grasping at shadows. The one thing that remained clear was the fact that someone had tried to kill my husband, and Claudia was the prime suspect.
When the police finally located Claudia, she was found in a small apartment on the other side of town. To my utter shock, she didn’t run or try to hide. She willingly came in for questioning, her demeanor calm, almost as if she knew something we didn’t.
The moment she walked into the police station, I felt a cold dread settle in my stomach. Claudia had been a trusted part of our household, and the idea that she could have betrayed us was almost too much to bear. But the evidence, though circumstantial, pointed toward her.
