The days that followed the detective’s call felt like a blur. I was caught between hope and dread, clinging to the possibility that this lead could finally bring us some answers. Kai’s condition had improved slightly—he was now able to communicate in short sentences, though he was still weak and confined to the hospital bed. Despite his fragile state, I knew he was just as eager as I was to find out who was behind his poisoning.
One afternoon, as I sat by Kai’s bedside, holding his hand, my phone buzzed with an incoming call. It was the detective. My heart leaped into my throat as I answered.
“Mrs. Kai,” the detective began, his voice calm but laced with urgency, “we have some news. Claudia has come forward with new information. She’s ready to talk.”
I felt a rush of emotions—relief, anger, fear—all at once. “What did she say?” I asked, my voice trembling.
“She wants to make a full confession,” he replied. “We’ve arranged for her to do so at the station. If you’d like, you can come
