Chapter 258

Tabitha's POV I almost burst into tears when I heard Dad's words. I had so many things I wanna ask him, for example, did he know anything about my real family at all? But I still chose to swallow back those questions when I saw his worried eyes. I had to be patient. His nerves hadn't fully recovered yet, and he couldn't be stimulated. "Dad, I'm fine. I mean it. I just... I've grown up. I'm not that childish anymore," I said to him, trying my best to sound calm so that he wouldn't notice anything different. "Alright then. Well, Derek is as good to you as always. I guess there's nothing for me to worry about." Dad reached out and ruffled my hair, his actions filled with paternal love. "The doctor says I'll be able to walk around on my own in a week or so." There was a hint of expectation in his tone. In fact, these days, he had been able to take a few steps with the help of external force. The recovery wasn't easy, but he managed to hang in there. I knew he didn't want to be a burden to me and wanted to be like normal people as soon as possible, so I wouldn't have to worry about him. "Good news, Dad! You can do it!" I encouraged him, although I had some mixed emotions inside. Seeing the smile on my face, he was in a better mood. "Oh, Tabitha, since I've been feeling better, I wanna use my phone to check the news." My heart skipped a beat. Derek's wedding was all over the media. "Soon. OK, Dad? It won't be good for your eyesight as well as your recovery." I tried to divert his attention. He sighed helplessly, "Alright." He had no doubts, just a bit of sadness. "It's getting late. Let's go back and have dinner. Have some more to eat, and then you'll recover better." I pushed him back to the room. Derek looked at us. One of us was with a hand hanging weakly, and the other was unable to walk. He took a few steps up to us. "Tabitha, I got it." These days, he always took matters into his own hands, but no matter what he did, I never looked at him. When Dad was around, I pretended a little. But when there was no one around, I simply left. Derek wanted to act as the perfect son-in-law? Suit himself. At least that made Dad happy. John's POV I keenly noticed the disgust that flashed across Tabitha's face. Although my brain was damaged, it didn't mean that I was blind or stupid. I was right. Something between Tabitha and Derek went off. "Derek, you are so busy every day. There are plenty of people looking after me, and you don't have to keep an eye on me all the time. Why not go and spend some time with Tabitha?" I tried to give him some space, hoping he'd notice Tabitha's mood swings. "I'll be with both of you. John, how are you feeling today? Better?" There was a completely gentle expression on Derek's face. "Much better. I can walk on my own within a week, tops. Derek, thank you for finding me the medical team. They've been taking great care of me every day." I said with gratitude. Thanks to Derek, my recovery had sped up a lot. "We're family." Derek pushed me to the dining table and reached out to pull out a chair for Tabitha, every one of his actions showing how thoughtful he was. "Tabitha, I'm a bit busy today. I'll cook for you tomorrow when I'm free." He was quite the fine example of a perfect man. Tabitha said "OK" nonchalantly so that I wouldn't be suspicious. I saw through her, but I remained silent. After the meal, Derek pushed me back to the room for rehabilitation. Every day, Derek would soak my feet in herbal water. He'd roll up his sleeves, get down on one knee, and give me a foot massage carefully, not as high and above as an Alpha at all. "Derek, it's just the two of us now. Tell me the truth. Did you have a fight with Tabitha?" I decided to ask him straightforwardly. After all, he said so himself. We were family. I guessed there was no need to beat around the bush. Derek paused for a second. Then he asked, "John, why would you ask that?" There was a hint of hesitation in his voice. I answered right away, "Before, she used to look at you with admiration, but now, there's nothing but hatred in her eyes." I was Tabitha's dad, and of all people, I knew her the best. I wouldn't miss any emotional changes she had no matter how subtle it was.
